Flash Floods and Excessive Surface Runoff in Bavaria:
Comprehend, Investigate, Evaluate

The HiOS (Hinweiskarte Oberflächenabfluss & Sturzflut) project has been commissioned by the Bavarian Environment Agency in August 2017. The aim of the research project is the development and the testing of a procedure for the evaluation and classification of the risk of the Bavarian municipalities from surface runoff and flash floods. Using a GIS application factors promoting or triggering surface runoff and flash floods are queried, linked, and evaluated. The results are then presented for four different precipitation scenarios in a Bavarian reference map. The reference map for surface runoff and flash floods is intended to provide first indications of possible hazards and aims at supporting further detailed investigations by representing the individual influencing factors such as e.g. slope or land use.

Within HiOS, we also investigate the possibilities of hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling of surface runoff and flash floods. This includes the post-event modeling of past damage events and the use of High Performance Computing (HPC).

The Bavarian Environment Agency funds the HiOS research project since August 2017 for a term of 3 years. Three scientific institutions cooperation in the HiOS project and are carrying out different tasks:

  • Technical University of Munich, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Disse:
Hydrological modeling with LARSIM, hydrodynamical modeling, GIS analysis

  • Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Prof. Dr. Ralf Ludwig:
Hydrological modeling with WaSiM, investigation of flash flood mitigation by scenario modeling

  • Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Prof. Dr. Dieter Kranzlmüller, Dr. Anton Frank:
Research data management, high-performance computing, module development
